Youths called to be Witnesses in time of Uncertainty

Mary Faustina ONYIA

Catholic Youth have been called on to be witnesses in time of uncertainty. This call was made by Most Rev. Anslem Lawani, the Bishop of Ilorin Diocese at the Opening Mass of the 105th National Executive Council Meeting held between 8th - 11th May, 2025 at M&M Pastoral Center Ilorin. The message delivered to Catholic Youth leaders across the nation urged them to be bold and faithful witnesses in a world filled with conflicting ideologies, social media, moral confusion, and global uncertainty.

The Bishop emphasized that being a witness is not just a duty imposed by an organization, but a sacred calling by Christ Himself. "Jesus calls us his witnesses not because we are perfect, but because we have encountered Him. This encounter with Christ is what empowers us to speak the truth and hold on to our faith, even in the face of adversity.”

The youth were urged to be bold, faithful, and effective witnesses, making a difference in their schools, workplaces, communities, and families. "You have the power to change the world around you, and to bring hope and light to a world that needs it."

The Bishop welcomed all youths across the nation on behalf of all the Bishops in the Province and he also wished them a successful deliberation.

The National Chaplain Rev. Fr. Gabriel Odunaiya; Ibadan Provincial Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Joseph Bamidele; Ilorin Diocesan Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Michael Olaifa; The National President, Kizito Gosife Eze; Ibadan Provincial President, Ayoola Pius Ayobami; the Diocesan President of Ilorin Diocese Ikem Mbah also gave their addresses.

At the closing Mass on 11th May 2025, which happened to be  The Good Shepherd Sunday, the homilist gave a poignant reminder of the importance of living out one's faith in today's world. The Homilist emphasized the need for young people to listen to guidance from Chaplains and strive to embody the values of compassion, kindness, and integrity.

The Homilist highlighted the pressing issue of declining morality and the critical role young people play in shaping the future of the Church. "The future of the Church is in our hands," He emphasized, urging the leaders to reflect on their actions and motivations.

A thought-provoking question was posed: "Are we sheep or wolves?" This enquiry challenges individuals to examine their behavior and consider whether they nurture and support those around them or exploit and harm them. The distinction is crucial, as it underscores the importance of being a positive influence in the lives of others.

The homilist concluded with a call to action on the Youth: To be Good Shepherds wherever we find ourselves. This means striving to live out our faith in every aspect of our lives, whether in personal relationships, workplaces, or communities. By doing so, we can make a meaningful difference in the world around us.
