
Regina Mundi Girls' Secondary School Hosts 3rd Edition of REGIMATPEDIA
The 3rd edition of the REGIMATPEDIA inter school Mathematics Competition was successfully hosted by the Mathematics Club of Regina Mundi Girls' Secondary School, Iwo, Osun State, on March 13, 2025.
The program commenced with an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr. Lawrence, Principal of Royal College, Bashorun, Ibadan.
The competition witnessed 11 participating schools from Iwo, Ibadan, and Osogbo, namely: Royal College, Bashorun, Ibadan; St. Peter Catholic College, Apata, Ibadan; St. Theresa Minor Seminary, Oke-Are, Ibadan; St. Albert The Great Catholic School, Mokola; Our Lady of Fatima Academy, Iwo; Precious Baptist Church High School, Iwo; Local Authority Community School, Iwo; Aipate Baptist Church Grammar School, Iwo; The Wings School, Iwo; Alma Rohm Baptist secondary School, Iwo; Our Lady and St. Francis Catholic College, Osogbo
While giving opening address to welcome all to the school and to the inter school Mathematics competition, Rev. Sr. Marilyn Doris Ilomuanya, Principal of Regina Mundi Girls' Secondary School, Iwo said Mathematics is an interesting and important subject that all students need to develop interest in and she wished all the participants the best in the competition.
The first stage of the competition, which involved a written test, featured two representatives from each participating school. After this round, a short break was observed, leading into an enlightening session with the guest speaker, Dr. S O Salawu from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Bowen University Iwo, who spoke on "The Importance of studying mathematics".
During his lecture, Dr. Salawu emphasized the significance of Mathematics to all students irrespective of the course they want to study in university. He added that Mathematics is a universal language that must be learned and understood by all human beings because it is very useful in all professions.
He also highlighted the World Mathematics Day, celebrated annually on March 14 every year and introduced this year's theme:
"Mathematics and Creativity in Arts and Education."
Dr Salawu then admonished secondary school students to like Mathematics because Mathematics is the queen of all other subjects and the love of Mathematics is the beginning of wisdom. "Mathematics has taken me to different countries, and I have won many awards because of it". He added.
After the lecture, the competition resumed with the second and third stages, anchored by the National Association of Mathematics and Statistics Students of Bowen University Iwo, Mr Enoch Kanikwu (President), Miss Mercy Oni (Vice President) and Miss Deborah Ayoola (Ex-President) as panel of judges.
At the conclusion of the competition, certificates of participation were awarded to all schools by the visiting priests. The final scores were collated, and plague were presented to the first, second and third positions as follows:
- 1st Position: Our Lady of Fatima Academy, Iwo.
- 2nd Position: Our Lady and St. Francis Catholic College, Osogbo.
- 3rd Position: St Peter Catholic College, Apata, Ibadan.
The competition served as an eye-opener for students, fostering a deeper appreciation for Mathematics. It was an engaging and educational experience, leaving participants eagerly anticipating the next edition of Regimatpedia.
The competition was attended by Fr. Lawrence Nwachukwu (Principal of St Albert The Great Ibadan), Fr. Felix Emerue (Principal of St Theresa Minor seminary Ibadan), Fr. Frederick Samuel (Principal of Our Lady of Fatima Academy Iwo), Fr. Raphael Agbaje (Principal of St Peter Catholic College Apata, Ibadan), Fr. Lawrence (Principal of Royal College Bashorun, Ibadan) as well as Mathematics teachers from all the schools present.
The vote of thanks was given by Mr. Bankole Michael, the Head of the Mathematics Club, while the closing prayer was led by Rev. Fr. Frederick Samuel. Plaques were presented to the winners by the Mathematics Club members, marking the end of the event.
