At the behest of the late Bishop Thomas Hughes of Ondo Diocese and the permission of Bishop Finn, the St. Peter Claver Sisters whose congregation's charism is evangelization through print media were invited to Ibadan to set up a printing press for such purposes. This was borne out of the difficulty that surrounded the importation of religious literatures. Moreover, local printers at that time proved to be quite incapable of understanding or producing Church's printed record books, such as baptismal books, marriage registers, and so forth.
As a result, we have Claverianum Press at Bodija, which was born in 1960 with the Catholic Weekly Independent Newspaper as its subsidiary unit. The Press was first managed by the Sister of St. Peter Claver, then by the Marist Brothers, by Archdiocesan Priests (late Msgr. F. Adeigbo and Fr. J. Pinheiro), lay staff, Mr. Francis Adio, and now by Frs. Asawale Paul as the Administrator and Akerele Joseph as the Assistant Administrator. The Independent Newspaper has had a series of editors such as Fr. Oneil, Mr. Lekan Olagunju, Mr. Leo Olanipekun, Mr. Foluso Adedigba, Fr. Felix Adadigba, Fr. Akiwowo, and Fr. Peter Ibimiluyi as the present editors.
While the Claverianum printing press was always envisaged as a printing house catering for the general needs of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, its initial and primary purpose was to print the Independent, the new Catholic newspaper set up in 1960. The first publication of the newspaper to hit the newsstand was published on August 14, 1960. For over sixty years now, the Catholic Weekly Independent Newspaper has been reaching its readers uninterruptedly through its weekly prints.
