Preserving the Integrity of the Nursing Profession in Nigeria
Certified Nigerian Nurses must address the activities of Auxiliary Nurses who claim to be Nurses despite lacking professional qualifications. These Auxiliary Nurses, often trained informally and without proper certification, should refrain from calling themselves "Nurses" as this undermines the integrity and values of the nursing profession. It is imperative that they adopt a distinct title to avoid confusion with certified professionals who have undergone rigorous training and education.
Many Auxiliary Nurses are inadequately educated and lack the necessary competence to handle critical medical situations. Alarmingly, some of them go as far as establishing healthcare clinics and referring to themselves as Doctors. This malpractice contributes significantly to the rise of incompetent and quack medical practitioners in society.
These unqualified individuals are often responsible for administering incorrect medications, performing unsafe medical procedures such as abortions, and causing severe complications, including infertility or even loss of life. Tragically, many people patronize these unqualified practitioners due to the lower costs of their services, disregarding the potential risks to their health and lives. However, it is essential to understand that seeking treatment from certified and qualified healthcare professionals in a standard hospital is a safer and more reliable choice, even if it comes at a higher cost. Remember, if there is life, there is hope—your health should always be a top priority.
The years of education and training that certified Nurses and Doctors undergo are not to be taken lightly. Their expertise cannot be compared to that of Auxiliary Nurses. Therefore, it is crucial for the Association of Nigerian Nurses and other regulatory bodies to intervene and regulate the activities of Auxiliary Nurses. They should enforce the use of a distinct title and uniform for Auxiliary Nurses to clearly differentiate them from Certified Professionals.
Health is wealth, and the public must be cautious about where they seek medical care. Always prioritize your health by consulting licensed and qualified healthcare practitioners. Avoid patronizing Auxiliary Nurses and Quack Doctors, as their incompetence can lead to severe consequences. Let us collectively work towards preserving the dignity and standards of the Nursing Profession in Nigeria.
