15 Years of Insurgency in Maiduguri: ‘No Priest Harmed’

The Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, at the heart of Nigeria’s 15-year insurgency, has recorded a remarkable testament of divine protection: Not a single Priest has been harmed despite years of violent attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups.

Reflecting on this extraordinary reality, the Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri, Most Rev. Oliver Doeme Dashe, attributed the safety of the clergy to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Speaking after the November 30 Consecration of Abuja Archdiocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Bishop Doeme emphasized the pivotal role of Marian devotion in the Diocese’s survival amid chaos.

“Our Mother Mary promises to protect her children, and we have seen this manifest in Maiduguri Diocese,” he said. “Since consecrating our Diocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary 13 years ago, we have witnessed her miraculous protection, even in the most dangerous situations.”

Bishop Doeme recounted near-miraculous occurrences, including a Priest who was captured by insurgents but returned unharmed after intense prayers and a Novena. “This Priest’s release, along with other captives, is a testament to Our Lady’s intercession,” he shared.

At the peak of the insurgency, over 25 parishes were abandoned, with communities displaced. Today, nearly all have reopened, and most now have resident Priests. Bishop Doeme called it “the work of Our Lady,” noting that Marian devotion continues to inspire faith and resilience across the Diocese.

Despite being Nigeria’s largest Diocese by landmass and operating in one of the most perilous regions, Bishop Doeme and his Auxiliary, Bishop John Bogna Bakeni, have traveled extensively for pastoral missions without encountering harm.

“Maiduguri is more peaceful today, and Our Lady has crushed Boko Haram,” Bishop Doeme affirmed. “Her protection has been our strength, and we remain committed to Marian devotions for her glory and the glory of her Son.”

The Diocese remains a symbol of hope and faith, proving that even in the face of prolonged conflict, divine intercession can shield and restore.
