FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT – PART V
FAITH
What is Faith?
Faith is the complete trust or confidence in someone or something. Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as “The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”.
- Faith is a supernatural gift of God, which enables us to believe, without doubting, whatever God has revealed. The fruit of faith is the ability to trust God and encourage others to do so, no matter the situation. Jesus says in Matthew 21:22, “Whatever you ask in prayer you will receive if you have faith”, and in Luke 17:15, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you could say to a mulberry tree to pull itself up by its roots and plant itself in the sea, and it would obey”. The scriptures compel us to have faith in God and the commandments of his word. It is easy to lose faith in life when hit with devastating news, worries, difficult situations, the storms that comes can cause us to doubt God. God wants us to trust in him, that he loves us and wants the best for us.
- Abraham’s faith in God was tested. He was already an old man when God brought him out and said to him, “Look towards the heavens and count the stars, if you are able to number them; so shall your descendants be” (Genesis 15:5). Abraham did not doubt God despite the fact that he was an old man.
- Sarah had long passed childbearing years and they had no child, but still believed and trusted in God.
- Also, Matthew 8:5-13 shows the faith of a Roman Officer. When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman Officer met Jesus and begged for help saying, “My servant is sick in bed at home and unable to move”. Jesus said “I will go and make him well”. However, the Officer said, “Oh no sir, just give the order and my servant will get well, for I do not deserve you to come into my house”. The Roman Officer had faith that by the words of Jesus, his servant would be healed.
