Catholic Church of Assumption, Oko Bale Ota Celebrates First Parish Harvest: A “Harvest of Divine Mercy”

On November 10, 2024, the Catholic Church of Assumption, Oko Bale, Ota, joyfully celebrated its inaugural harvest as a parish, marking a memorable occasion filled with thanksgiving, praise, and community spirit. The event was themed “Harvest of Divine Mercy” and drew over 400 parishioners who gathered to witness the historic celebration and give thanks for the year’s blessings.

The celebration began with a Solemn Mass, officiated by Fr. Peter Ogiator. During his homily, Fr. Ogiator emphasized the importance of trust in God and the spirit of giving. Drawing from the readings of the day, he encouraged the congregation to give with faith, reinforcing that God’s providence sustains all who trust in Him. The homily resonated deeply with the congregation, especially as it was echoed by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Adegboyega Oriyomi, JCD, who stood alongside Fr. Ogiator to mark this special day.

The event was not only a spiritual gathering but also a lively celebration of the community’s unity and dedication. Following the Mass, the parish hosted a vibrant bazaar, which included performances by the Holy Childhood Association (HCA), a variety of bazaar sales, and an abundance of food and drink for all attendees. Songs and jubilation filled the air as members and invited guests joined in the festive activities.

Mr. Francis Oba, the Laity Chairman, expressed his gratitude for the event's success. “Despite the economic challenges, our people gave freely to God. It is a testament to the spirit of this community and our shared goal of creating a beautiful, fitting place of worship,” he remarked.

He also commended the Harvest Planning Committee for their diligent efforts, noting that they organized a remarkable event despite the limited preparation time.

Chairperson of the Harvest Planning Committee, Barrister Mrs. Joyce Odin, shared similar sentiments, extending her heartfelt thanks to the Parish Priest, the committee team, and all supporters. “We are truly an achiever team,” she said, reflecting on the joy of a successful and fulfilling celebration that set a positive tone for future events.

In his speech, the Harvest and Bazaar Chairman, Mr Daniel Garcon said ‘we are all partakers in the kingdom of God. Our service and work must be used to elevate God's kingdom.’ He said emphasis must be on God alone who provides, sustains and protects. He said we all desire Mercy of God and as such all must be merciful. He reiterated that all goods come from God and we should be generous to our God who is the sole provider.

The Catholic Church of Assumption, Oko Bale, was established on August 15, 2010, and was recently elevated to a parish on April 4, 2024, by His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo. This harvest celebration, as the first in its new status, symbolized a significant milestone for the Church and showcased the dedication and unity of the parish community.

The event concluded with gratitude and joy, as parishioners left with a renewed sense of commitment to build and grow their parish family, trusting in God’s providence and the divine mercy that inspired this year’s theme.
