THE RESPONSIBLE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA(PART 1)
I write to reflect on a topic that affects all of us in ways I would say we can’t even conceptualize yet in its fullness. No one is exempted from the effects of this reality which I will call a phenomenon. It touches us not just at a theoretical level but very practical yet, it can’t be easily grasped.
What am I talking about…? Social Media. Where is it? Is it just on our phones? No. We can operate it on our multiple devices. It is so immense that pseudo accounts can be created and you might not even be able to trace the persons operating the accounts. In fact, the Social Media juggernaut resembles the wind in the forest fire. It advances its spread. Most news (good or bad) now breaks on Social Media before it gains Mass Media adoption.
As much as Social Media can raise awareness for a brand to reach its target audiences and beyond, Social Media also is the same platform that can tear down and ruin a brand’s reputation… Kimberly Olsen observes. Nancy Herther concludes that “Social Media is major force in our lives, a juggernaut driven by human behaviour and available technology, and it’s moving faster than what research, legislation or social norms can keep up with… so buckle up is her recommendation.”
And it is on that note that I will invite you to reflect with me on the topic: The Responsible Use of Social Media. And I must add that it has to be an on-going reflection.
