HOW DO WE PARTICIPATE IN THE SINS OF OTHERS? (PT II)

By Provocation: Provoking or instigating an individual to commit a sinful act causes us to share in the responsibility for its commission.

For example, in playing on someone’s pride and foolishness and pushing them to commit a sinful act, one can share in the sin. For instance, entering a bet and challenging an individual that he or she cannot take a particular sinful step whether through word of mouth or by actions may provoke the person to act to prove himself or herself. Actions of others can also be provocative as to lead to sinful acts.

By Praise or Flattery: We fall into this type from time to time, when we praise someone who carried out a sinful act and we applaud.

For example, we might praise a government’s policy, in spite of knowing that such policies are sinful and borders on such things as stealing and corruption or even life threatening.

By Concealment: Another avenue to sharing the responsibility for another’s sin is by concealing or hiding their sinful act. We may be guilty of this if we fail to apply punitive or correctional measures, in order to help the perpetrators or speak out.
