PROMISE FULFILLED

Rev. Fr. Gabriel AZEEZ

Beloved in Christ, I say beautiful morning to you all. We thank God for what He has done and what He continues to do for us and with us. We thank Him for yet another new day and we thank Him for the gift of the Holy Spirit He is graciously bestowing upon us this morning, may His name be praised both now and forever.

Perhaps, we still have those we are yet to greet happy Easter, we have few hours to go and do that now, because after today Easter season comes to a halt. Today is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it, because He has promised and He has finally fulfilled His promise. What a marvelous God we have for ourselves!

Today we celebrate Pentecost, the day when the Father's promise to His people was gloriously fulfilled. Today also marks the end of Easter season, and equally serves as the nativity of the Church. This was no accident of history but the culmination of divine faithfulness. Two Sundays ago, Jesus had assured them, "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you" (John 14:18), and through the Holy Spirit, He kept that word. The promise given centuries earlier through the Prophet Joel "I will pour out my Spirit on all people" (Joel 2:28) burst into reality, empowering the Church to proclaim the mighty acts of God to every nation under heaven.

What I have come to realize about this God of ours is that whatever He says He will, he will surely do.  Throughout Sacred Scripture, we witness a God who speaks promises and unfailingly brings them to pass. Let us begin from Abraham, He promised descendants as numerous as the stars and a land of inheritance; through Isaac and the nation of Israel, this was fulfilled. To Moses and the enslaved Hebrews, deliverance from Egypt and a covenant at Sinai became reality amid plagues and parted seas. The greatest promise of all was the Messiah: "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son" (Isaiah 7:14), realized in Jesus Christ. Even in our doubts, like Sarah's laughter or the disciples' fear, God remains true.

As Joshua declared, "Not one of all the Lord’s good promises failed; everyone was fulfilled" (Joshua 21:45). Pentecost stands as the seal of these truths, showing that the God who promised the Spirit would not withhold His greatest gift. Don’t be in a hurry, He knows what He is doing, He knows the right time to make it right with you, He knows the best time to give you all you have been asking for.

Aside fulfilling His promises, let us also consider what the Holy Spirit does in our life as Christians. I was moved with the explanation of St. Basil the Great in his treatise On the Holy Spirit, he says, the Holy Spirit is nothing less than deification and transformation. As Basil teaches, souls in whom the Spirit dwells become spiritual themselves, radiating grace to others; they receive foreknowledge, understanding of mysteries, heavenly citizenship, joy without end, and ultimately, likeness to God. The Spirit is not a creature but the very life-giver who completes the Trinity's work in us, enabling us to cry "Abba, Father" and to be built into a holy temple. This indwelling elevates humanity from corruption to glory, making the Church the living Body of Christ.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if the Lord could fulfil every promise he made in the scripture and yet fulfilling another one this Sunday, because today’s event is not just a history but continuous act of God’s goodness to humanity, I am very sure that yours will not be difficult to do. Even though, it is said that hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life" (Proverbs 13:12).

Remember, God is always faithful; trust Him even when answers are delayed, believe in His process even when it seems clouded, move from fear to boldness: live empowered by the same Spirit given at Pentecost and stay open to continuous renewal through prayer, sacraments, and surrender. Since God fulfilled His promise, respond by living as true disciples in love and mission.

On this Pentecost, our longing for God's presence is fulfilled in the Holy Spirit. Let this assurance strengthen our faith: the same God who fulfilled every promise in Christ and poured out His Spirit at Pentecost remains faithful to complete His work in us until the day of full redemption. Come, Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth! Amen.
