BISHOP BADEJO BLESSES NEW CHURCH BUILDING OF ST. MARY, AYETORO-ILE
Michael OKEOLA
The Blessing and Opening Mass of the new St. Mary Catholic Church, Ayetoro-Ile, was held in a joyful and prayerful atmosphere as the faithful gathered to appreciate God for His goodness and the successful completion of the church building.
The Holy Mass was presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, who delivered a homily centered on the importance of gratitude to God.
In his homily, the Bishop expressed appreciation to the Priest-in-Charge, Rev. Fr. Philip Onifade, as well as all priests who had previously served in the parish, including Rev. Frs: Joseph Adejumo, Joseph Ogundipe, John-Toye, Matthew Oladosu, Fr. Akinola, and others. He also acknowledged the contributions of catechists, prayer leaders, and the lay faithful who played vital roles in the building of the Church.
He reminded the congregation that thanksgiving is a fundamental aspect of the Christian life, noting that every blessing—life, health, family, and daily provision—comes from God. He encouraged the faithful to cultivate a heart of gratitude, not only in times of abundance but also during challenges.
The Bishop further reflected on Biblical teachings, emphasizing that God is pleased when His people acknowledge His works. He urged the congregation to remain faithful, prayerful, and generous, stating that thanksgiving should be expressed through good deeds, love for others, and continuous service to God and the Church.
He also cautioned the faithful not to take God lightly, stressing that “we must not joke with God,” and encouraged them to always give back to God in appreciation for His blessings. Referring to the day’s reading, he noted that, like the prophecy of Prophet Ezekiel, God has the power to restore all that seems lost or broken in our lives.
The homily was concluded with a call for trust in God, assuring the faithful that the same God who has brought the project to completion will continue to guide and protect them.
In his remarks, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Philip Onifade, expressed deep gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the project. He gave special recognition to the Ogunsola family for their support, particularly appreciating Dr. Miss Felicia Olakanbi for her significant contribution toward the construction of the Church building and borehole facilities. He also thanked all priests who honored the invitation with their presence.
Speaking during interviews, Mr. Dominic Ogunsola expressed great joy at the completion of the Church, recalling the challenges faced during the construction, including the earlier collapse of the structure. He appreciated the resilience of the parishioners and the support of benefactors, especially the Ogunsola family, in ensuring the project was completed.
Similarly, Mr. Ojedele Anthony, Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) of St. Joseph Parish, Iwere-Ile, expressed happiness at the realization of the long-awaited project. He acknowledged the sacrifices of past generations and thanked the Ogunsola family for continuing their legacy of support for the Church.
Honourable Anthony Obisola also described the event as a historic moment for the community, noting that the rebuilding of the Church stands as a testimony of faith and perseverance. He encouraged the faithful to continue supporting the work of God, emphasizing that such contributions build not only the Church but also eternal rewards.
Also speaking, Honourable Anthony Ogunsola, representing Iwajowa State Constituency at the Oyo State House of Assembly, commended the unity and commitment of the people, urging continued dedication to the growth of the Church.
The celebration concluded with joyful songs of praise and thanksgiving, as the Bishop blessed the newly constructed borehole, marking the successful completion of the project and a new beginning for the parish community.
