It was a moment of deep spiritual significance and joyful reverence on March 18, 2025, as Catholic youths, clergy, and Church leaders gathered at the Interchange Roundabout at Abeokuta to receive the Cross and Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help from the Lagos Province, Abeokuta Diocese.
The atmosphere was filled with anticipation, devotion, and unity. The symbolic handover was witnessed by Chaplains Rev Fr. Victor Agordi (Ibara Deanery, Abeokuta) and Rev. Frs. Gabriel Azeez and Aimè Lasanga (Ibadan Chaplains), Youth animator representing CBCN, Mrs (Amb) Edith Isidahomen, the Provincial Secretaries, Mr. Okanlawon Damilola (Lagos), Miss Uzor Assumpta (Ibadan), as well as Archdiocesan and Deanery executives of Ibadan Archdiocese, all of whom assembled to welcome these sacred items. The Cross and Icon, which represent faith, sacrifice, and the enduring intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, were received with prayers, hymns, and solemn procession.
Following the reception, the sacred symbols were reverently conveyed to their designated location, marking the beginning of a spiritually enriching period for the youths of the Archdiocese.
The spiritual momentum continued with the Youth Lenten Vigil held from March 20 to 21, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Cathedral, Oke Padi. The vigil witnessed an impressive turnout of over 365 youth members, excluding Chaplains, animators, and parishioners, reflecting a strong commitment among young people to deepen their faith during the Lenten season.
The vigil created an avenue for personal encounter with God, as many youths were seen actively participating and immersing themselves in the sacred exercises.
One of the major highlights of the vigil was the inspiring talk delivered by the facilitator, Rev. Fr. Joseph Baranjoko on the theme: “Remain here and keep watch” (Matthew 26:38). The message was both timely and impactful, calling on all present to embrace vigilance in prayer, steadfastness in faith, and a deeper awareness of Christ’s presence, especially in moments of trials and spiritual dryness.
The facilitator’s delivery resonated with many, leaving participants challenged and encouraged to strengthen their personal relationship with God.
The vigil featured a rich blend of spiritual activities that sustained engagement throughout the night. These included the procession with the cross and icon, which set a solemn tone for the vigil, as well as the veneration of the cross and icon, allowing participants to express personal devotion. Other sessions such as the Way of the Cross, Rosary recitation, confessions, Divine Mercy prayers, deliverance and group prayers created opportunities for spiritual cleansing and renewal. The praise and worship session was vibrant and uplifting, while the Benediction provided a moment of deep Eucharistic encounter. The vigil was crowned with the celebration of the Holy Mass, which brought together all elements of the night into a profound act of thanksgiving and communion.
