Church of Assumption, Oko Bale Celebrates First Assumption Feast Day as a Parish

The Catholic Church of Assumption, Oko Bale, marked its first Assumption Feast Day celebration as a newly established parish on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

The celebration, steeped in deep spirituality and community engagement, was a momentous occasion for the Church, which was officially elevated to parish status on April 4, 2024, by His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Odetoyinbo. Under the leadership of the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Oriyomi, the parish came together for a week-long program that culminated in a joyous feast day.

 

Novena: Spiritual Preparation for the Feast

The celebration began with a nine-day Novena to Our Lady of Assumption, which commenced on August 9. Parishioners and faithful gathered in prayer and reflection each evening, focusing on the virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and seeking her intercession for the Church and individual needs. The Novena fostered a spirit of unity and deepened the faith of the community, drawing them closer to God through Mary.

 

Bible Quiz Competition and Group Discussions

In the spirit of learning and sharing faith, the parish organized a Bible Quiz competition and group discussions during the feast day week. The Bible Quiz, which saw enthusiastic participation from various Church societies, tested the knowledge of scripture and Catholic teachings. It was a vibrant display of the parish’s commitment to the Word of God, with participants showing great dedication and enthusiasm.

The group discussions allowed parishioners to engage with one another on various topics of faith, with themes centered around Mary, the Mother of God, and her role in the Church. These discussions fostered a deeper understanding of Catholic beliefs and promoted spiritual growth within the community.

 

Feast Day Mass and Laity Thanksgiving

The highlight of the celebration was the Assumption Day Mass, presided over by Rev. Fr. Joseph Oriyomi. In his homily, Fr. Oriyomi emphasized the significance of the Assumption of Mary and encouraged the faithful to imitate her humility and obedience to God’s will.

He also reflected on the Church's journey to becoming a parish and thanked God for the growth and unity experienced thus far.

Following the Mass, the Laity thanksgiving ceremony took place. Parishioners came forward in joyful thanksgiving, expressing their gratitude to God for the blessings received as a community.

This was a profound moment of worship, where everyone acknowledged the grace and presence of God in their lives.

 

Awards and Reception

In recognition of the dedication and participation of various Church groups during the feast day events, prizes were awarded to the top-performing societies in the Bible Quiz competition.

The Catholic Women Organization (CWO) emerged the winner, followed by the Legion of Mary in second place, and the Young Missionary Movement of Nigeria k (YOMM) in third place. These awards were a testament to the vibrant faith and active involvement of these groups in the life of the parish.

The celebration concluded with a grand reception, where parishioners gathered to share in a communal meal, fellowship, and entertainment. It was a joyful moment, filled with music, dance, and performances from different societies, bringing the entire parish family together in celebration.

The first Assumption Feast Day celebration at the Church of Assumption, Oko Bale was a significant milestone, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the community and their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. As the parish continues to grow, there is great hope for even more impactful events and spiritual growth in the future.
