COCCA Holds Bi-Monthly Meeting at St. Anne’s, Sasa

ST ANNE MEDIA TEAM

The Catholic Organists, Choirmasters and Choristers’ Association (COCCA) held its bi-monthly meeting at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Sasa, in the Archdiocese of Ibadan on the 16th of November, 2025.

The day began with members joining the parish for the 9:00am Mass, after which everyone moved to the Church hall for the meeting proper. The opening prayer was said, followed by a brief exhortation from Mrs. Ambrose, a member of the parish choir who encouraged everyone to use their gifts well, no matter the circumstances.

Although the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Peter Ajeigbe was unavoidably absent, he was represented by Mrs. Nancy Olayinka, one of the Church’s Councilors. She welcomed COCCA warmly and shared that the parish choir is doing well, noting that the priest has trained the choristers to be confident and independent in their duties.

The parish choir report was then presented by the Music Director, Mr. Chuka Onyonye, along with the Choir President, Miss Sarah Iyamu.

During the Mass review, COCCA members applauded the choir’s effort, especially her zeal and coordination. However, they also pointed out a few areas that need attention:

  • Song Selection: Choose hymns familiar to the congregation and rely more on the hymn book so everyone can follow.
  • Congregational Participation: Encourage singing that draws the whole Church in, and remind choristers to pronounce words clearly.
  • Gender Balance: With about 99% of the choir made up of women, the parish was encouraged to begin a small recruitment drive for more male voices.
  • Offertory Song: The piece used was longer than necessary and overlapped with the consecration. It was advised that offertory songs be scheduled earlier for better timing.
  • Technical Issue: Off-key moments were due to a faulty keyboard, and the parish was advised to have it checked.

The meeting ended on a friendly note with light refreshments and appreciation from both sides for the opportunity to share, learn, and grow together.
