Be Calm, Trust in God, Fr Adeyemi encourages Nigerians

The Parish Priest, Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Pro-Cathedral, Lagere, Ile-Ife, Osun State; Rev. Fr. (Dr) Peter Oluseyi Adeyemi has encouraged Nigerians to be calm but resolute while exercising their rights. This admonition came Sunday, August 4 while addressing the people of God.

He affirmed that though it is difficult to pray considering the current sad situation in Nigeria where the stomach is empty; hunger, he said, should not be just about physical food.

He realised that while there are many, who would not make it to the Church because of the hike in the cost of transportation, many others may be at home due to an unsure meal and some others may feel lonely due to lack of offering to the Church. He assured them that God is listening.

Father Adeyemi frowned at the generational attitude of the country's leaders making promises that are continuously unfulfilled. He flashed back to the unfruitful Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of former President Ibrahim Babangida; how it ended up a mystery despite the mouth-watering promises at that time.

The priest emphasized on trust in God and not on human; his reason is that - while it is necessary to hold the leaders responsible for their actions, only God can adequately fulfil promises.

He opined that if God is trusted, he, who provided meat for the Israelites of old despite being in the desert can still provide in the present time. He observed that in spite of the choking situation of the country, many people are still blessed; reasoning that as God can turn sorrow into joy, He turns unimportant things into blessing.

However, Fr Adeyemi sternly warned Nigeria's politicians against greed. According to him, "That is what is killing our Nation." He realises that many rich people ran away from the country before and during the protest, yet some met their graves at their convenience.

He further educated that what is important for the government to remove is greed and not necessarily subsidy. According to him, whatever is accumulated through greed turns into maggots; wealth for others.

He notified the government that Nigerians don’t want sweet talks any longer. "If our suffering is temporary, it may be bearable, but if it would be prolonged in Nigeria, Tinubu should stop it," said the Priest.

However, Christians were encouraged to seek Jesus, and while seeking him, they should avoid limiting their purpose to miracles and breakthroughs. They were advised to seek beyond the physical, but the spiritual.
