THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN PRAYER.

In the last couple of weeks we have discussed more on prayers as one of the pillars of Lent. This week, we shall examine the role of the Holy Spirit in prayer. But first, Who is the Holy Spirit?

One thing we should first be clear about is that the Holy Spirit is a person; as a person, it means we can talk to it, we can converse with it as we do with a friend. The Holy Spirit is also Divine. Being divine, it intercedes for us with the Father. It is equal in dignity and majesty with the Father. The CCC 688 highlights ways in which the Holy Spirit worked and continues to work in our lives and the life of the Church

—in the Scriptures he inspired;

—in the Tradition to which the Church Fathers are always timely witnesses;

—in the Church’s Magisterium, which he assists;

—in the sacramental liturgy, through its words and symbols, in which the Holy Spirit puts us into communion with Christ;

—in prayer, wherein he intercedes for us;

—in the charisms and ministries by which the Church is built up;

—in the signs of apostolic and missionary life;

—in the witness of saints through whom he manifests his holiness and continues the work of salvation.

Beyond this, what are some practical ways to nurture our relationship with the Holy Spirit?

1. Consistent prayer life – Pray. Pray. Pray. You can not have enough prayer. You can start by making it a daily habit to pray. After mastering it, then you can cultivate praying all through the day. You can also choose to pray every hour. Anywhere and everywhere you go. This type of prayer is silent and could just be a second prayer where you could say either of the following: “Thank you, Jesus”, “Jesus, I Trust in You”, “O Lord, help me”, or “Come, Holy Spirit”. Praying in this manner helps you to stay connected with God and helps you to be rooted in God.

2. Study the Bible – The Bible is God’s words to us, it is important to know what is in there by ourselves and for ourselves. However, where to begin can seem daunting, so I will recommend:

- Read the Gospel of the day slowly, and before you begin, say the prayer “Come Holy Spirit.” Having read it, pause a while and reflect on what you have read, looking out for what stood out for you in the Gospel.

Another way to study the Bible is to join a Bible study group, where you can share insights with other members.

-yet another way that I have found personally helpful in addition to joining a Bible study is listening to a Catholic Bible podcast.
