Bishop Bulus Reflects on the Enduring Legacy of Bishop Ayo-Maria, “A Life Well-Lived”
In a poignant sermon delivered during the Vigil Mass for the late Bishop Ayo-Maria Atoyebi on 27 March 2025 at the St. Joseph Cathedral, Ilorin, Bishop Bulus Yohanna of Kontagora Diocese reflected on the enduring legacy of a life well-lived. He testified that Bishop Ayo-Maria’s remarkable journey, marked by dedication, simplicity, and holiness, left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals and the Catholic and non-Catholic community at large.
Bishop Bulus fondly remembered Bishop Ayo-Maria’s unwavering faith in others, particularly his fellow priests, and his encouragement for them to overcome their shortcomings. “He demonstrated trust in everyone, which is a virtue we should all emulate,” Bishop Bulus said, highlighting the importance of trust in building strong relationships.
The preacher also emphasized the importance of simplicity and humility in Bishop Ayo-Maria’s life, which was a testament to his unwavering commitment to his faith. He noted that Bishop Ayo-Maria’s life was a shining example of how faith can intersect with public life in meaningful and transformative ways.
The sermon also underscored Bishop Ayo-Maria’s commitment to social justice, which extended beyond his ecclesiastical confines. “His impact on politics in Kwara State through advocacy for peace, unity, and social justice is a testament to his dedication to creating a better society,” Bishop Bulus noted.
The Bishop of Kontagora also celebrated Bishop Ayo-Maria’s remarkable gift for preaching, which inspired many people through his passionate and clear delivery of the Word of God. “He was a born preacher, endowed with remarkable gifts that set him apart in the realm of spiritual leadership,” Bishop Bulus affirmed.
Furthermore, Bishop Bulus emphasized the importance of unwavering hope and faith in Jesus, citing Hebrews 10:23, which encourages believers to “hold fast the profession of our hope without wavering”. Thus, he encouraged the congregation to stay deeply rooted and firm in their faith, and to never give up hope in the Lord Jesus.
As the congregation gathered to bid farewell to Bishop Ayo-Maria, Bishop Bulus reminded them that the Christian burial is a celebration of hope, emphasizing the certainty of eternal life and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “We are not here as mourners with sorrowful tears; rather, we stand as men and women filled with joy, hope, and praise,” Bishop Bulus said.
