TEMPTATION IS A LURE, A WEAKNESS, A DISTRACTION THAT CAN LEAD TO SIN- FR ESEOLA

In his homily for the First Sunday of Lent, Fr. Emmanuel Eseola, reflected on the universal experience of temptation, emphasizing that it is a common challenge faced by all Christians. The Parish Priest of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Mokola gave the reflection at the 6.30am Mass held on Sunday March 9, 2025.

Fr. Eseola noted that the Lenten season is a period of spiritual renewal, where Christians especially Catholics are called to overcome sin. However, he cautioned that temptation is a persistent obstacle that can hinder this process.

‘Temptation is a lure, a weakness, a distraction that can lead to sin,’ Fr. Eseola explained. But as Christians, we have the power to overcome temptation. Jesus himself was tempted by the devil, despite his divine power and strength.

Fr. Eseola warned that the devil is a cunning manipulator who uses various tactics to tempt individuals. "He lies, he deceives, and he promises false rewards,” Fr. Eseola said. But we must remember that the devil has no power over our decisions. We have the freedom to choose between good and evil.

Fr. Eseola also cautioned against the temptation of seeking quick fixes or miracles, which can lead individuals away from the path of righteousness. Attending miracle centers or seeking shortcuts to spiritual growth can be a form of temptation, he warned. We must instead focus on deepening our relationship with God through prayer, reflection, and service.

To overcome temptation, Fr. Eseola emphasized the importance of living a spiritual life, rooted in the Word of God. "Jesus overcame temptation by using the Word of God," he said. We must also know the truth of God's Word and live by its principles.

In conclusion, Fr. Eseola urged Christians to be vigilant and consistent in their efforts to overcome temptation. Temptation will come every day, but we must be prepared to face it with courage and faith, he said. Let us use this Lenten season to renew our commitment to living a life of holiness and righteousness.
