MY JOURNEY TO THE PRIESTHOOD
Rev. Fr. Jude Adeyemo jointly celebrated 10 years Priestly Ordination Anniversary at Maria Assumpta Catholic Church Olubadan on October 11, 2024 in a Grand Style.
The following Sunday, in his parish, St. Francis Catholic Church, Sanyo-Soka had an elaborate celebration in his honor. Considering his gentility, zeal for his mission, wisdom among other virtues we decided to interview him. Here below are his responses.
“Embarking on the journey to the priesthood is a profound and transformative experience, shaped by faith, inspiration, and unwavering support from loved ones. My journey began as a young boy in a small, close-knit community where the values of compassion, service, and spirituality were integral to our daily lives. Among the many influences in my life, none has been as significant as the guidance and mentorship of Reverend Father John O'Hea.
Father O'Hea was not just a priest; he was a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for everyone in our parish. His sermons were powerful yet accessible, filled with wisdom and a genuine understanding of the struggles we all faced. He had a unique ability to connect with people of all ages, and his warm smile and open heart made everyone feel welcomed.
As a child, I looked up to him and admired his deep commitment to his faith and his community. I vividly recall how he would take the time to speak with us after Mass, asking about our lives and encouraging us to pursue our passions.
It was during one of these conversations that Father O'Hea first planted the seed of the priesthood in my mind. He shared stories of his own journey, emphasizing that becoming a priest was not just about leading a congregation but about serving others, fostering love, and bringing people closer to God. His passion was infectious, and it made me start to consider how I could serve my community in a similar way. This conversation ignited a spark within me, and I began to feel a calling that I could not ignore.
As I continued my education, I became more involved in the Church community, participating in youth groups, volunteer opportunities, and retreats. Each experience deepened my understanding of my faith and strengthened my desire to pursue the priesthood.
Father O'Hea played a pivotal role in these formative years, often guiding our youth group with patience and wisdom. He encouraged us to explore our spiritual gifts and find ways to use them in service to others. Under his mentorship, I discovered the joy of helping those in need, whether through community service projects or simply being there for someone who was struggling.
While Father O'Hea's influence was significant, I cannot overstate the role my family played in my journey. From a young age, my parents instilled in me the values of faith, compassion, and integrity. They taught me the importance of community and service, often leading by example. I remember watching them volunteer at local shelters, offering assistance and comfort to those less fortunate. Their actions demonstrated to me that living a life of faith meant actively engaging with and uplifting others.
When I first expressed my desire to pursue the priesthood, my family met my aspirations with love and encouragement. They listened to my concerns and dreams, reassuring me that this path was not only noble but also a calling that could bring immense fulfillment.
My parents emphasized the importance of prayer and discernment, encouraging me to take the time I needed to reflect on my decision. Their unwavering support provided me with the confidence to follow my heart, knowing that I was not alone in this journey.
As I moved through high school and into college, my family continued to be my rock. They attended my ordination ceremonies, celebrated my achievements, and offered guidance during moments of doubt.
I often found solace in their unwavering faith, which served as a reminder that my journey was not solely my own but a collective effort shaped by the love and support of those around me. Each family gathering was a testament to the strength of our bond, reinforcing the idea that together we could navigate any challenges that lay ahead.
Today, as I stand on the brink of celebrating a decade in the priesthood, I carry with me the lessons learned from Father O'Hea and the love of my family. His example of humility, service, and dedication to the community has inspired me to embrace my calling wholeheartedly. I am grateful for the foundation my family has provided, as they have nurtured my spirit and helped me grow into the person I am today.
In conclusion, my journey to the priesthood is a tapestry woven with threads of inspiration, faith, and love. The influence of Reverend Father John O'Hea has shaped my understanding of service and community, while my family's unwavering support has given me the strength to pursue this noble path not forgetting my friends and benefactors.
As I continue my journey as a priest after a decade, I do so with a heart full of gratitude, ready to serve others and carry forward the legacy of compassion that has been instilled in me by both my mentor, my family and friends.”
