Kafancha Diocese Celebrates St Peter Claver, PATRON SAINT OF THE DIOCESE

It was a day of celebration for the Clergy, Religious and Lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Kafancha as they gathered to celebrate the Solemnity of St. Peter Claver at the Cathedral of St. Peter Claver, on 8th September 2024.

The Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Kafancha, His Lordship, Most Rev. Julius Kundi in his homily at the Holy Mass of Thanksgiving noted that the Diocese was celebrating the Solemnity of St. Peter Claver, a Holy Man and a dedicated Servant of God who as a Priest and Missionary was remembered for his great contributions in bringing many people closer to God.

He further stated that according to Church’s tradition and history, St. Peter Claver showed great love and care for all people regardless of their background, and cared for the least, the lost and those who have suffered and faced terrible challenges and trials in life.

"We are gathered today to be inspired once more by the great examples showed by this great Saint, who through his teachings showed us how we all can also live our lives worthily as disciples and followers of the Lord." The Bishop noted

The Chief Shepherd of the Catholic Diocese of Kafancha reminded the congregation that the memorial of St. Peter Claver was upgraded to Solemnity in the Diocese in the previous year so as to further celebrate the Saint who is the Patron Saint of the Diocese.

"Since last year when we upgraded the celebration of Saint Peter Claver, Our Patron Saint to a Solemnity, we come together to celebrate in a special way by engaging in prayers and actions to help bring about peace in our Communities, State and the Country at large." Bishop Kundi revealed.

"Today, we are celebrating a Father, a Comforter, a Nurse and an Evangelizer of the suffering people. As a Father to the elderly he used to say: “Think, my friend that your house is already old and is threatening to crumble. Go to confession now, while you have the time and while it is easy”.

Bishop Julius Kundi called on the Priests and Co-workers, the Religious and beloved Laity of our Diocese to reflect on Saint Peter Claver’s unwavering compassion and commitment to justice in saving the souls of over 30,000 slaves in the past and likewise go home and do the same. He urged them to use any good thing the Lord has made available at their disposal: The pulpit, kitchen, office, societal status, wealth and influence to ease the burdens of the least, the lost and the marginalized in our society.

"Like Peter Claver who saw the face of Christ in every enslaved person, let us be more challenged in our dealings to recognize the dignity of all individuals, in spite of the religious or denominational divide." The Chief Shepherd admonished

"Let us open our doors and welcome everyone. Let us share our bread with them. Let us shelter them. These virtuous acts will make us holy and help us to confront the modern injustices in our land and to be advocates for the marginalized communities in this country." The Prelate charged.

Bishop Julius Kundi finally stated that the celebration was not only to identify with the Patron Saint of the Diocese, it was also a gathering to also pray to seek forgiveness and call on the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen all in daily struggle for peace and social justice in this land.

Most Rev Julius Kundi prayed that God will be with the Diocese and bless each and every one of their good works and endeavours, now and always.

The Bishop led the Clergy of the Diocese, Religious and Lay faithful in the thanksgiving procession during the Mass and blessed everyone.
