I am Chosen, but not Gullible!
The shenanigan and show of shame that dominates Christendom under the guile of miracles is a cause for concern.
While it is true that Paul spoke of himself as a fool for Christ (1 Cor 4. 10), yet his actions and words undoubtedly prove that the foolishness of God (and of his elect) is wiser than human wisdom!
However, it is quite unfortunate how gullible many Christians have become and how easily they fall prey to ravenous wolves who parade themselves as ‘anointed ones of God’.
Earlier this week, the laughable and far from rational testimony sessions of a particular Christian denominations were making it around on various social media platforms and with the harsh reality of present times, it was quite easy for many of these testimonies to become raw materials in the hands of comedians.
The Catholic Church’s stance on the synergy of faith and reason must at this time be re-emphasized, especially as the bifurcation of these two realities continues to reduce Christianity to an uncritical and comedic religion.
Indeed, the assertion of Pope St. John Paul II that, “Faith and Reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth”; remains timelessly true. Truth can only be discovered through the interaction of faith and reason together and the two are jointly necessary to know and pierce the mysteries of God.
Notably, while faith enables us to comprehend truths that transcend the bounds of reason and are undiscoverable by it alone, reason may enable humans to discern scientific fact, nonetheless, only faith informs us of the ultimate end, goal, purpose, and plan for science.
Ironically, while Christianity continues to suffer heavy blows in the Western world in the face of secularism and rationalism, which is notably fuelled by the astonishing discoveries in the areas of Science and Technology; however, the direct opposite is the case with many African nations and particularly with Nigeria, especially as Many continue to capitalize solely on faith, even when reason clearly adjudges it to be foolish.
Or what do we say of a Pastor who successfully sold some antiseptic liquid to his congregations, assuring them that with his prayer over the liquid, it is potent enough to wash their all life's problems away? How about the hilarious, less than-rational testimonies of a particular Church that is currently trending, in which the mere uttering of certain words miraculously reduces God’s angels to bolt or Uber drivers; making an individual suddenly immune to cutlass and Ak47; and makes another get an angel to whisper solutions to a difficult examination into her ears.
Jesus Christ needs us to be faithful, reasonable, but not gullible! And even when He said that having faith as small as a mustard seed can enable us to move mountains, He also told us by word and example not to put the Lord to the test when He refused Satan’s instruction to jump down from the pinnacle of the temple.
Indeed, through grace I am chosen by God through whom all is possible, but He also calls me to exercise my faith in consonance in the light of reason, which is also a gift from Him with whom there is no shadow of contradiction.
