[CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH PART THREE, LIFE IN CHRIST] – PART I

 

The Ten Commandments, also called the Decalogue (Ten words) are summed up and proclaimed God’s Law. The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21. The summary below is from the New American Bible.

1. I, the Lord Am your God, you shall not have other gods besides me.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep the Sabbath Day Holy.
4. Honour your Father and your Mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife.
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

 

Q1. What are the First Three Commandments?

 Love of God

Deuteronomy 6:5 – “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind” – Luke 10:27. This injunction helps keep our minds and hearts focused. It highlights what is truly important in the normal life – a wholehearted, loving response to God who loved us into being and graciously sustains us, gives us Jesus and destines us to eternal life.
