Harmony Fills the Air: 2024 Community Hymn Singing at St. Kizito Catholic Church -COCCA celebrates Archbishop Abegunrin at 75.

On a sunny Sunday, September 15th, 2024, the St. Kizito Catholic Church in Oluyole, Ibadan, was abuzz with excitement as the highly anticipated 2024 Community Hymn Singing event organized by COCCA kicked off at about 2:30 pm. The atmosphere was electric, filled with an air of joy and anticipation.

As the crowd poured in, the Church's hall was transformed into a sea of colorful attire, with representatives from various Choirs and Communities proudly wearing their unique uniforms. The sense of unity and shared purpose was palpable.

The event commenced with a soul-stirring opening prayer by the Vicar-General, Very Rev. Fr. Gregory Oyelami, followed by an opening remark made by the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Prince Charles Fapounda. The audience erupted into applause as the Archdiocesan Choir took the stage, setting the tone for an unforgettable afternoon of melodious hymns and heartfelt praises.

One after another, the Choirs showcased their incredible talents, rendering beautiful songs that resonated deep within the hearts of the listeners. From traditional hymns to contemporary Church hymns, the diverse repertoire kept the audience engaged and enthralled.

Highlights of the event included a stunning rendition of "As the deer and Crown the Lord of Host" by the Azegba Children, Neto and Udochukwu. They thrilled the audience with their mastery of the keyboard and the violin. and a hauntingly beautiful presentation of "The Parts of the Mass" by the Archdiocesan Choir.

As the afternoon wore on, the energy in the hall continued to build, culminating in a grand finale that featured a choir performance of "Then sings my soul by Stuart K. Hine" The thunderous applause that followed was a testament to the power of music to unite and uplift. 

The event also featured the cutting of a birthday cake in honour of the 75th Birthday Anniversary of Archbishop Abegunrin coming up on the 29th September 2024.

Fr. Peter Ibimiluyi, the Archdiocesan Music Chaplain was there to do justice to the vote of thanks as He appreciated persons and groups who have worked tirelessly to making the event a huge success. He noted that this year's is with a difference, with a significant upgrade. 

In his closing remarks, the Archbishop, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Abegunrin, commended the expertise and professionalism of the Instrumentalists who blended so well with the Choirs. He encouraged that this be taking to the parishes so as to continue to have a very beautiful liturgy.

His Grace called on all present to be of good character, avoid the syndrome of ‘I know it all’ and cease from pride which goes before a fall. He beckoned on all to grow in self-discipline as this will help to have a more sane environment. 

He did not fail to give kudos to the Archdiocesan Choir and all other Choirs who made the event a very memorable one. He called on the Archdiocesan Choir not to sideline Parish Choirs but work hand-in-hand with them at Diocesan functions. He emphasized the importance of community and the role of music in fostering unity and strength.

As the crowd dispersed, faces still aglow with the joy and spirit of the occasion, it was clear that the 2024 Community Hymn Singing at St. Kizito Catholic Church would be etched in the memories of all who attended for a long time to come.
