A CALL TO MODESTY AND REVERENCE IN GOD’S HOUSE
Fidelis ENWEMEKA
During the 2026 May Devotion at St. Peter’s Parish, Ota, Rev. Sr. Florentina Echem of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit (DHS) reminded the faithful of the importance of modesty in worship. She lamented the growing trend of immodest dressing in the Church, stressing that outward appearance should reflect inner humility and reverence before God.
Responding to a parishioner’s concern that young girls no longer wear scarves as a sign of respect, Sr. Florentina shared her own journey. As a member of the Legion of Mary in Lagos, her parents required her to tie a scarf like the religious women. That discipline, she said, nurtured her devotion and guided her path into religious life.
Echoing her sentiments, Mr. Chukwuma Chisom, President General of the Association of Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart of Mary, encouraged parish groups such as the Catholic Men Organization (CMO), Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), Catholic Women Organization (CWO), and the Holy Childhood Association (HCA) to take responsibility in guiding parishioners toward modest dressing. He affirmed that when the faithful uphold reverence in their attire, they honour the sanctity of worship and strengthen the witness of the Church.

Well said! Thanks for this.
