FAITH AMIDST LOSS: BISHOP BADEJO CELEBRATES MASS IN IDIKO-AGO
Michael OKEOLA
The Catholic Bishop of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, celebrated Holy Mass with the faithful of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Idiko-Ago, following the destruction of the Church’s roof by a recent natural disaster.
The Bishop was warmly received on arrival by members of the community, including Mr. Obaniyi Ezekiel, Mr. Oyelami Stephen, and Miss Ojediran Sarah, who were among those that welcomed and accompanied him from his place of stay to the Church.
Despite the damage, the Mass was held in an atmosphere of faith and resilience, as the Bishop joined the parishioners to worship under a tree. In a light moment, he humorously acknowledged the unusual setting, turning it into a symbol of unity and unwavering faith among the people.
Present at the Mass was the Onidiko of Idiko-Ago, Oba Joseph Tewogbade Oyediran, who shared a moment of fellowship and goodwill with the Bishop, reflecting the strong bond between the Church and the traditional institution.
In his homily, Bishop Badejo greeted the priests, seminarians, and parishioners, urging them to remain grateful to God in all circumstances. He emphasized that “all power belongs to God, and He does not misuse the power He has,” noting that while God’s works may sometimes seem mysterious, they remain purposeful.
The Bishop expressed gratitude that, despite the destruction of the Church roof, no lives were lost, describing it as a reason for thanksgiving. Referencing the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans, he encouraged the faithful to deepen their trust in God, stressing that “there is nothing impossible for God.”
He further lamented the decline in strong faith among many people today, urging the congregation to hold firmly to God in every situation. According to him, “in whatever condition we find ourselves, we must hold on to God,” adding that while God desires our happiness, it must be pursued in ways that are pleasing to Him.
Speaking after the Mass, the Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council (CPC), Comrade Awolere Emmanuel, expressed gratitude to the Bishop and the Onidiko of Idiko-Ago for their care and support. He also appreciated the assistance received from other Churches, particularly the Ijio Deanery and their mother Church, St. Paul Catholic Church, Itasa.
In an interview, Mr. Obaniyi Ezekiel described the Bishop’s visit as impactful, noting that it has contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Church. He thanked the Bishop for his financial and moral support, describing him as a pillar of encouragement to the parish community.
The visit stands as a powerful testament to faith, unity, and hope, as Idiko-Ago community continues to rebuild and remain steadfast despite the challenges.
