You are More Than a Body

Lilly Path with Ifeoma Odisa UGWU

Hi Sister,

This past week, many people were shaken by the news of a young woman who lost her life after complications from a BBL procedure. Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly common, and conversations around body modification, beauty standards, and appearance are everywhere online.

Every scroll on social media brings perfectly edited bodies, filtered faces, and carefully curated images. Slowly, almost quietly, comparison begins. What starts as admiration sometimes turns into dissatisfaction. A nose becomes a problem. Hips are suddenly too small. Skin is not smooth enough. Waistlines are not tiny enough. Before long, the body you once lived in peacefully begins to feel like a project that needs correction.

But Sis, we need to pause here.

Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse was said by the same David that was scrawny and was not considered regal enough when Samuel came to pick the next king of Isreal. The same David who could not wear a soldier’s armor and stand erect. He knew beauty and strength is ultimately anchored on who you are in God. It is truth. Your body is not a mistake. It is not an accident. It is not an unfinished draft. It is the work of God.

That does not mean you cannot exercise, care for yourself, or improve your health. Stewardship of your body is good. But there is a difference between caring for your body and becoming dissatisfied with it. Right now, many young women are being taught, subtly and repeatedly, that beauty must be manufactured. But God’s design is not defective.

Genesis 1:27 tells us that human beings were created in the image of God. That means your body carries dignity beyond trends, beyond filters, beyond social media approval. Yet the pressure is real.

Online spaces can be brutal even offline. People comment freely about bodies that are not theirs. They ridicule weight, skin tone, facial features, and shape. Some young women wake up to thousands of strangers analyzing their appearance as though they are objects. Please a Lily path girl/lady/woman should not be among those bullies or mocking anyone for their body.

Proverbs 12:18 says, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Words can wound deeply, especially when they are repeated, amplified, and shared publicly. If you have ever been mocked online, compared harshly, or made to feel small because of your appearance, hear this clearly.

Cruel voices do not define your worth.

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are “God’s workmanship.” The word workmanship suggests intention, care, and craftsmanship. You are not random. You are designed. But confidence must be built on something stronger than appearance.

Beauty is real, and it is good, but beauty alone cannot carry the weight of identity. Bodies change. Trends change. Faces age. If your confidence is rooted only in how you look, it will always feel unstable. God offers a deeper foundation.

1 Samuel 16:7 says, “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” This does not mean your appearance does not matter at all. It means it is not the most important thing. Character lasts longer than curves. Wisdom travels further than aesthetics. Kindness is remembered longer than symmetry.

Sis, your generation is under immense pressure to look a certain way. But the call of God on your life is not to become a perfect image (that perfection was already established at creation when the God said “let us make man in our own image…”). It is to come into oneness with God.

  • A woman who knows God.
A woman who grows in wisdom.
    A woman who carries compassion.
A woman whose confidence comes from identity, not validation.

Romans 12:2 encourages us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That transformation begins with how you think about yourself.

You are not a collection of measurements. You are a soul. A mind. A spirit. A future. A calling. And while the world spends enormous energy editing photos and reshaping bodies, God is interested in shaping hearts.

This week, I want to leave you with a few gentle reminders.

  • Care for your body because it is God’s creation, the temple of the Holy Spirit, not because you are ashamed of it.
  • Be cautious of voices online that profit from your insecurity.
  • Refuse to join conversations that mock other people’s bodies.
  • Speak life over yourself and over other women.

And remember that true beauty grows deeper with time.

Proverbs 31:30 tells us, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” That kind of beauty cannot be surgically created or filtered. It is formed slowly, through faith, wisdom, humility, and grace.

Sis, you are already a beautiful work in progress. Do not let a noisy world convince you otherwise.

Prayer

Lord, help me to see myself the way You see me. Protect my heart from comparison and insecurity. Teach me to care for my body with gratitude and to build my confidence on the truth of who I am in You. Help me to speak kindness to myself and to others. Amen.

With love and prayers,
Your big sister in Christ
