The parishioners of St. Anne Catholic Church, Igangan, were filled with great joy as they celebrated their first Reverend Sister, Rev. Sr. Christiana Oguntoyinbo, who made her final profession of vows on September 27, 2025, at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Bodija, Ibadan, under the Congregation of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit (DHS).

A special Thanksgiving Mass was held at St. Anne Igangan on November 30, 2025, where family members, friends, parishioners, and well-wishers gathered in large number to rejoice with the parish and with Sr. Christiana. Present also during the Thanksgiving Mass was Rev. Fr. Victor Ugbor the priest in charge of St. Rita Catholic Church Olowu, Igangan.

During his homily, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Calistus Afolabi, expressed happiness over this historic milestone in the parish.

He said:

“Sister has been called to serve God and His people, and she must be ready to live the vows she has professed — poverty, chastity, and obedience. We are truly joyful to have her as the first Reverend Sister from our parish.”

Fr. Afolabi also gave a brief history of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, noting that the congregation was founded in Plérin, Brittany, on December 8, 1706, by Marie Balavenne, a widow, with the support of Jean Leuduger, a priest who is considered a co-founder.

After the celebration of the Eucharist, the Thanksgiving proper was held, with many parish groups and visitors present, including fellow sisters from the DHS congregation.

During the reception, another Reverend Sister offered a more detailed history of the congregation, explaining that it was founded by Marie Balavenne and Renée Burel, both from modest families in the Port town of Légué. They felt called to live in community and devote their lives to serving the poor, the sick, and children—especially through the education of poor girls.

She encouraged young people to open their hearts to God’s call and advised parents not to discourage their daughters from pursuing religious vocations.

The reception that followed featured various entertainments, including a dance drama by the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), as well as performances by the youth and children.

An award was also presented to Rev. Sr. Christiana Oguntoyinbo in recognition of her dedication and commitment. The entire celebration was filled with joy and thanksgiving, marking a memorable day for St. Anne Parish, Igangan, and the Oguntoyinbo family.
