USOA CONGREGATION MOURNS BISHOP ADELAKUN
Vincent OBANIYI
The University Sisters of the Assumption (USOA) have joined the faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo in mourning the passing of their beloved father and mentor, Most Rev. Julius Babatunde Adelakun, the Bishop Emeritus of Oyo Diocese.
Speaking on behalf of the congregation, Sr. Augustina Ngozi Okechukwu, Superior General of the University Sisters of the Assumption, described the late Bishop as a wonderful and humble man, full of joy, generosity, and compassion.
According to her, Bishop Adelakun played a significant role in her spiritual formation and that of many sisters since 2012. She noted that if she were to choose role models in her life, Bishop Adelakun would certainly be among them. He was her teacher and an example of humility. Even in his old age, he remained eager to celebrate Mass with the sisters, always full of love and dedication.
Sr. Augustina recalled her last encounter with the Bishop in September 2025, when, despite his frailty, he expressed a strong desire to celebrate Mass at the novitiate. She said this reflected the kind of person he was — always ready to serve and give himself completely.
Also sharing her reflection, Sr. Elizabeth Ngozi Anieke, Secretary General of the Congregation, described Bishop Adelakun as a generous and honest man who loved everyone equally and stood firmly against tribalism and racism. She recounted how the bishop supported the sisters at the Novitiate House in Idiba, often visiting several times a day to ensure their needs were met. Even in his later years, he was punctual at every event and brought joy wherever he went. He was a true father who gave everything for his children.
Both sisters expressed deep gratitude for the privilege of having known and worked closely with Bishop Adelakun, affirming that his virtues and legacy will continue to inspire generations of the University Sisters of the Assumption.
“We thank God for granting us the grace to encounter Baba in our lifetime,” Sr. Elizabeth said. “We believe he is already resting in heaven. May God sustain his legacy among us, and may we continue to emulate his humility, honesty, and compassion.”
