Osogbo Diocese Set for 3rd Lectors’ Commissioning

The rigorous training of lectors preparing for commissioning in the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo has come to an end on Saturday 17th August, 2024. This appearance at the St. Benedict Cathedral, Popo, Osogbo, Osun State is the fourth time the candidates converged for lectures within the period of a year.

The fourth section also served as refresher course for the commissioned ones, those yet to register for commissioning courses and new members of the association. The fourth meeting embodies summary of Lectures from the first, second and third phases.

While commissioning to some is long-awaited as there are those who misses out of the first and second commissioning edition; the wheats were also removed from the chaffs as those who did not attain the required pass standard will not be commissioned.

Topics covered throughout the training include: Need to train a lector, Lectors and corrections, Lectors as communicators-servers-choristers, Ministry of lectors in Vatican II, Sacred dramatic scripture, Efficacy of the Word of God vis-à-vis ministry of lectors, Performance anxiety, Liturgical calendar, Seasons and Colours.

Several practicals also followed, which included that on Sacred Vessels, vestments and linens. At the training, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Layade stressed that lectors must be trained because the scripture is central to the Holy Mass and the reader handles what is sacred by proclaiming the scriptures where a single word should not be lost. Rev. Fr Anthony Akinlawon, in his presentation, intimated lectors on their roles in the eye of the Church, and the importance of understanding the holy writings to be proclaimed.

He encouraged them that, since they have been entrusted with sacred responsibility, they should embrace it with dedication, humility, and a deep love for the Word of God. He urged them to remember that their ministry is not just about reading; it is about proclaiming the living Word—a Word that transforms hearts and builds up the Church. He noted that knowing the holy writings is essential for Lectors to fulfil their roles effectively.

For an effective delivery of the word of God, Akinlawon emphasized on thorough preparation through study, prayer, practice, and reflection. This according to him will bring the Word of God alive for the assembly, inspiring faith, hope, and charity in all who listens to them.
