In a continued effort to promote inclusion and end discrimination against persons with disabilities, the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) Ìbàdàn, in partnership with clusters of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), recently organized a grassroots sensitization campaign for members of the Bodija Market Association in Ibadan.

The outreach was designed to enlighten traders on the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities while encouraging collective responsibility in fostering an inclusive society where everyone can thrive, regardless of physical or mental ability.

Speaking during the program, our representatives explained that discrimination and stigmatization often begin at the community level, and marketplaces being one of the most vibrant social spaces serve as strategic entry points for awareness creation. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone understands that persons with disabilities are entitled to equal opportunities, respect, and fair treatment in every aspect of life,” says Fola Awoyemi, JDPC Ibadan Program officer.

Participants were educated on the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, which makes it unlawful to deny any person with disability access to public spaces, employment, education, or economic participation. The team also emphasized that inclusion is not merely a matter of charity but a human right that benefits society as a whole.

Members of the market association were urged to extend empathy, patience, and support to persons with disabilities who trade or interact within the market space. The facilitators also encouraged them to challenge stigma at home and in the community by nurturing understanding among their peers and family members.

A key highlight of the session was the discussion on the need for families to embrace and support children and relatives living with disabilities instead of hiding or neglecting them. Participants were encouraged to ensure such individuals are given access to education, skill acquisition, and other livelihood opportunities that can help them live independent and fulfilling lives.

Some of the market leaders who attended expressed gratitude to JDPC and the PWD cluster for the enlightenment program. They pledged to extend the message to other traders and to promote an inclusive atmosphere within the market.

This collaborative initiative reflects JDPC’s sustained commitment to promoting equality, dignity, and social justice for all. By working closely with persons with disabilities and engaging market stakeholders, the Commission continues to strengthen grassroots advocacy for a society where no one is left behind.
