A LIFE OF FAITH AND FRUITFULNESS: MAMA EMILY OYETOLA ADUFE OGUNGBENLE CELEBRATES 80 GLORIOUS YEARS AT ST. PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, ITASA

‎Vincent OBANIYI

‎It was a day of joy, thanksgiving, and heartfelt reflections as the community of St. Paul Catholic Church, Itasa came together on Friday to celebrate the 80th birthday of a beloved Matriarch, Mama Emily Oyetola Adufe Ogungbenle. The event was graced by dignitaries, clergy, family members, and well-wishers who gathered to honor the life, legacy, and enduring faith of a woman described as “a Proverbs 31 mother” and “a modern-day Hannah.”

‎The Mass was presided over by the Bishop, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, with the homily delivered by Rev. Fr. Samson Ojo.

‎In his homily, Fr. Samson Ojo began by acknowledging and appreciating the presence of the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, who honored the occasion. Fr. Ojo also welcomed Rev. Fr. Taiwo Oludare from Ondo Diocese, the family of late Mr. Pius Ogungbenle, and the traditional ruler of Itasa, the Onitile, and expressing gratitude to all who came to witness and celebrate such a significant milestone.

‎Fr. Ojo centered his message on the importance of living a life in alignment with the will of God, stating, “Without living a good life in God, one cannot truly belong to Him.” He used Mama Ogungbenle’s life as a living example of godliness and quiet service, portraying her as a devout Catholic woman who has consistently walked with God for decades. He noted that Mama is not one for loud celebrations or public recognition, but her impact is deeply felt by all who know her.

‎Drawing parallels with Hannah in the Bible, Fr. Ojo described Mama as a woman who serves the Lord with her whole heart, faithfully and without seeking attention. “Our lives belong to God, not to ourselves,” he reminded the congregation. “Mama’s life is a testimony that a good name is more valuable than gold and silver.”

‎Fr. Ojo revealed that he has known Mama for over 26 years, during which her devotion, character, and Christian values have remained steadfast. “She never relented in serving God,” he said. “Even in her old age, she continues to attend early morning Masses, showing her unwavering commitment to the faith.”

‎He described her as a merciful and loving woman who is always kind to those around her. She is also known as a strong woman, a disciplined mother, a dedicated farmer, and a neat and organized individual. Mama Ogungbenle is a proud mother of two Reverend Sisters and a Catechist, which speaks volumes about her influence and legacy as a Christian parent. Fr. Ojo concluded by calling on the congregation to celebrate their parents while they are still alive, acknowledging the sacrifices and prayers that many mothers like Mama have made for their families.

‎After the homily, the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Gabriel Agboola gave his vote of thanks, appreciating everyone who came to support and celebrate with the Ogungbenle’s family. He acknowledged the Bishop, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, all the priests present, guests, and community members for their presence and prayers.

The Bishop’s Address: A Salute to a Life Well-Lived

‎In his address, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo expressed heartfelt joy and gratitude for being part of the celebration. He felt compelled to attend and honor Mama Ogungbenle. “Sometimes, we don’t need an invitation to do what is right,” the Bishop said. “I am here because this woman is a gift—not only to her family but to the entire Church.”

‎The Bishop extended his greetings to Mama Emily Oyetola Adufe Ogungbenle and her children, commending them for their unwavering commitment to faith and family. He also acknowledged the presence of the Onitile of Itasa and the entire community for showing such love and support.

‎Reflecting on the spiritual fruitfulness of Mama’s life, Bishop Badejo stated, “When a woman is blessed with many children, and those children grow up to become Priests, Reverend Sisters, and Catechists, we know that God is truly in that family.” He praised Ogungbenle’s family for raising their children in the way of the Lord and encouraged other parents to follow their example.

‎The Bishop also reminded the congregation that they had just concluded the Holy Spirit Novena, and urged them to continue praying for God’s presence in their lives. He then offered a special blessing for Mama, praying, “May Almighty God never put you to shame. May He continue to strengthen you, and may your legacy endure from generation to generation.” He concluded by praying for the entire congregation, asking for God’s protection, wisdom, and favor upon all present.
