Series 59: FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT – PART VI MODESTY
What is Modesty?
Modesty is an essential base for humility. We must conduct our lives with humility, not claiming any credit for ourselves, but giving all credit and thanksgiving to God by accepting his holy will.
- By the fruits of modesty, one learns to be contented. James 4:6 teaches that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. We should humble ourselves, acknowledging that any success and achievements are not truly ours, but gifts from God.
- Modesty in dressing suggests that men and women should adorn themselves with proper and discrete clothing (1 Timothy 2:9-10). Many Churches today are nothing but fashion shows, where people go to show off their immodest clothing. We need more people to stand up and say No to this.
- We are expected to be modest in our actions and speech.
In all, this is a quality or state of being unassuming in the estimation of one’s ability.
CONTINENCE
What is Continence?
Continence talks about three things: self-control, preference for all things in moderation, and understanding the genuine value of limitations.
- Continence is the ability to exercise self-control of one's needs and desires, and not in a repressive and suppressive way.
- It enables a person to be moderate and temperate in their needs and desires, and to rebuff temptations. This will also mean an ability of self-restraint.
CHASTITY
What is Chastity?
- Chastity is the condition or state of being chaste, unblemished and uncorrupted, and is synonymous to sexual purity.
- It suggests not having sexual relationship before and outside marriage, and fidelity to one's husband or wife during marriage. This is the opposite of the deadly sin of lust, of which Jesus says in Matthew 5:28, “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has committed adultery with her in his heart”. Colossians 3:3-5 says, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you, sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires and covetousness which is idolatry”. We are told in Corinthians 6:18-20 to flee from sexual immorality, and that every other sin a person commits is outside the body; but in sexual immorality, a person sins against his or her own body, because our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we should glorify God with them.
