This week, I want to highlight an important solemnity that August is known for - the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 15 August. This solemnity became entrenched in my mind while I was living in a predominantly Muslim country, and the solemnity of the Assumption was a public holiday for the entire country! That is how significant the feast is. The Assumption commemorates the belief that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken body and soul into heavenly glory by God. It is a celebration not only of Mary's unique privilege but also of the destiny that awaits all who remain faithful to Christ.

In Mary, the Church sees the fulfilment of God's promise that death does not have the final word. Her Assumption is therefore a feast of hope, reminding us that our earthly pilgrimage is ultimately directed towards eternal life with God.

 

Mary's Assumption was not an isolated honour bestowed without reason. It was the crowning grace of a life marked by complete trust, humility, obedience, and unwavering fidelity to God's will. From the moment she answered the angel, "Let it be to me according to your word," Mary surrendered herself entirely to God's plan. She remained faithful through moments of joy and profound sorrow, from the birth of Jesus to His crucifixion. Her steadfast discipleship teaches us that true greatness lies not in earthly achievement but in faithful service to God, even when the path is difficult or misunderstood. We should ask ourselves: how often do we surrender to God’s will?

 

For us today, Mary's Assumption is an invitation to lift our hearts above the distractions of daily life and fix our eyes on the things that truly endure. It encourages us to imitate Mary's virtues of surrender, humility, purity, compassion, and trust in divine providence. Like her, we are called to carry Christ into the world through our words and actions, becoming instruments of His love wherever we find ourselves. Her life reminds us that holiness is not reserved for a few extraordinary people but is the universal calling of every disciple.

 

As we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady this August, let us thank God for giving us Mary as a model of faithful discipleship and as a loving mother who continually intercedes for the Church. May her glorious Assumption strengthen our confidence in God's promises, inspire us to persevere in faith, and fill us with the joyful hope that one day we too may share in the fullness of the resurrection.
